Magnificent Heritage: Celebrating Utah's 29 Counties

Representing every area of study from the Museum's collection, this new exhibit features at least two objects from every county in Utah. You will see objects made and used by people living in this area thousands of years ago, insects and plants from the early days of the Pioneers, along with beautifully designed Native American pieces made recently. Runs indefinitely.

The Spalding Butterfly Case

UMNH: Spalding Butterfly CaseThe lobby is home to The Spalding Butterfly display, which is approximately 4 x 4 feet. On display through a generous loan from the Utah Lepidopterist’s Society , the case has been with the Museum for many years.

The specimens, collected by Thomas Spalding in 1911, are arranged in an intricate, lovely pattern. Unfortunately they are also faded due to decades of sunlight exposure (most while not under the care of our Museum). Adjacent to that historic display is a case of the same species of butterflies and moths that have been protected from light. This offers a color comparison as well as gives the common and scientific names of the specimens. Surrounding the cases is information about Mr. Spalding as well as about changes in entomological curatorial practices. We are delighted to be highlighting this unique and striking historical record of Utah entomology.
